I am Sharon Bethea, the author of "From Whiteboards to African Ancestral Wisdom: A Radical Shift in Teaching." I believe in the transformative power of African-centered pedagogy. But first, let me tell you, I've been right where you are. As far back as I can remember, I felt a disconnect. The curriculum, textbooks, and historical narratives seldom reflected my cultural background or acknowledged the contributions of Black scholars, scientists, and artists. As an educator, I’ve felt the frustration of searching for educational resources that truly resonate with the genius, experiences and identity of my students. My journey has been fueled by a desire to break free from the stereotypes and omissions that perpetuate a sense of inadequacy among Black children. The prevailing curriculum often leaves Black students feeling marginalized and detached from their cultural heritage.
In response to this, I firmly believe that African-centered pedagogy is not only necessary but also pivotal in fostering the holistic development of Black students. I infuse my curriculum with stories of resilience, achievements, community and the profound contributions of African and African Americans throughout history. Through African-centered teaching, I plant seeds of knowledge and cultural appreciation that continue to blossom in the hearts and minds of generations to come. The approach aims to cultivate a sense of identity, pride, and academic achievement. I encourage educators to embark on the journey toward African-centered pedagogy.
